The winner of the 1978 Pulitizer Prize for distinguished commentary, he's also written 14 books on writing, usage and speechmaking, making him one of the most widely read writers on the English language. His most recent work is Safire’s Political Dictionary. In 2006, Safire was awarded the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
