The Bankruptcy Taxation Committee will hold a joint session with the Consumer Bankruptcy Committee on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. entitled “The Financial Nuts and Bolts of Representing a (Really) Small Business.” Panelists will discuss differences between representing a large corporation and small business and advise on the intricacies of filing and interacting with the client. Hon. Linda B. Riegle of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court (D. Nev.) in Las Vegas will moderate the session. Panelists will include Charles F. Rosen of the Law Offices of A. Lavar Taylor in Santa Ana, Calif. and Steven A. Schwaber of the Law Offices of Steven A. Schwaber in San Marino, Calif. The 17th Annual Bankruptcy Battleground West will take place at the lavish Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Friday, March 13. This year's program, "Singing in the Rain: Preparing For the Bankruptcy Floodgates To Open," will highlight emerging legal issues involving real estate, asset sales and claim preservation. One session will be of particular interest to the committee.
The session, "Bolt the Door Before You Lose Your Rights," will address concerns about federal income tax consequences resulting from using liquidated trusts, settlement trusts, funds and accounts, disbursing agents and other assignments to third parties to satisfy debtor claims and liquidate assets.
