Committee Session At The Winter Leadership Conference
The Winter Leadership Conference will be held Dec. 4-6 in Tucson, AZ, at the Westin La Paloma. This year's conference will feature another great group of sessions and speakers, as well as some top-notch entertainment! The Consumer Bankruptcy Committee will hold a joint session on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., with the Real Estate and Legislation Committees. The Consumer Committee's Education Director, Alane Becket of Becket & Lee, LLP in Malvern, Pa., will moderate the panel for the session entitled "Politics, Practicality and People: The Impact of the Mortgage Meltdown in Bankruptcy." The 2nd Annual Chicago Consumer Bankruptcy Conference, held October 13, 2008, attracted more than 140 consumer bankruptcy professionals from around the country. Attendees heard from experienced local chapter 7 and 13 consumer attorneys, bankruptcy judges and panel trustees as well as a representative from the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees. There were several sessions of great interest to the committee.
In the session "Recurring Automatic Stay Issues in Consumer Bankruptcy: Section 362(c)," panelists discussed the automatic stay, particularly sections 362 and 521, and its effect on real estate issues. The 28th Annual Midwestern Bankruptcy Institute was held in Kansas City, Mo. on October 3, 2008. The American Bankruptcy Institute and the UMKC School of Law partnered on the program and ensured that the meeting upheld its well-earned reputation by featuring distinguished speakers on current bankruptcy developments. Two programs of particular interest were the "Plenary Session: Case Law Update" and "Resolved: Official Form 22C conclusively determines 'projected disposable income' for chapter 13 debtors with above-median income."
The Plenary session on recent case law updates covered exempt property and trustee rights. The panel included the academic view as well as that of the bench. Panelists included Hon. Dennis R.
