18th Annual Chief Judge Conrad B. Duberstein National Moot Court Competition

The ABI and St. John's University School of Law will once again partner to present the prestigious Chief Judge Conrad B. Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition in New York, March 13-15, 2010. The competition will take place at St. John's University School of Law and the Conrad B. Duberstein U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse, with the gala awards banquet at scenic Pier 60, Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

Judging the finals this year are Hon. Guy Cole (6th Cir.), Hon Steven Colloton (8th Cir.), Hon. Wallace Tashima (9th Cir.) and Hon. Gerald Tjoflat (11th Cir.), along with the Chief Bankruptcy Judges of the S.D.N.Y. (Hon. Stuart Bernstein) and E.D.N.Y. (Hon. Carla Craig).

This competition is widely recognized as one of the nation's preeminent moot court competitions. It promotes and recognizes the finest oral and written advocacy on significant issues in bankruptcy practice. Approximately 50 law school teams participate, making it the largest single site moot court competition. The deadline for entry is Monday, November 23, 2009. Don't delay, register your team today!


ABI's 2nd Annual Law Student Writing Competition

ABI's Bankruptcy Litigation Committee is pleased to invite students to participate in the 2nd Annual ABI Bankruptcy Law Student Writing Competition. We invite papers on current issues in the business or consumer realm regarding bankruptcy jurisdiction, bankruptcy litigation, or evidence in bankruptcy cases or proceedings. 2010 Byrne Judicial Clerkship Institute Program

ABI will partner with the Pepperdine University School of Law for the 2010 William Matthew Byrne, Jr. Judicial Clerkship Institute. The next program will take place at the Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, Calif., March 18-20, 2010. As the Judicial Clerkship Institute aims to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of judicial clerks, ABI has designed a track specifically for bankruptcy law clerks. Law students or graduates who have been selected for a term clerkship with a federal, district, bankruptcy or appellate court judge are eligible to attend. ABI will provide 24 scholarships for bankruptcy law clerks to participate. Watch your mailbox in the coming months for more information on the 2010 program.


Committee Session Materials for ABI's 21st Annual Winter Leadership Conference

ABI's 21st Annual Winter Leadership Conference will take place Dec. 3-5 at the gorgeous La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, Calif. La Quinta is the classic Palm Springs resort, nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Enjoy the beautiful landscape, as well as renowned tennis, golf and the spa. This year's conference will offer insights from some of the top insolvency and restructuring experts on issues confronting the profession in 2010.

The Law School Committee will partner with the Ethics Committee to present a session entitled "It's a Small, Small, World: Inherent Conflicts in Representation of Closely-held Entities and Joint Representation" on Friday, Dec. 4 at 3:45 p.m. Panelists will discuss disclosure requirements under Rule 2019, prospective conflict waivers, and ethical issues that arise when representing small business debtors, shareholders and multiple parties. Hon. Joan N. Feeney of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court (D. Mass.) in Boston will moderate. Panelists will include Neil B. Glassman of Bayard, P.A. in Wilmington, Del., Stuart A. Gold of Gold Lange & Majoros, PC in Southfield, Mich., August B. Landis of the Office of the U.S. Trustee in Las Vegas and Keith McDaniels of Winston & Strawn LLP in San Francisco.
